2000. Ferro cement. 200cm x 120cm x 160cm.
Simon Fraser University.
Winner of the Millennium Project for the Academic Quadrangle at Simon Fraser University, this interactive sculpture resembles a cocoon that has been split in two. The outer surface is coarse grey concrete with horizontal lines resembling the surrounding architecture. The inner surface of one element reveals the negative shape of half an egg. The inner surface of the other element is a highly polished metal surface with text inscribe. The text states the core values of SFU. Depending on the position of the viewer, the reflection seen in the polished surface either captures the university building, or the image of a negative half egg. Standing between the two halves is an experience that mirrors that of the passage through the university, which etches those same values to its students.
