Narrative Concept - Log Riding
My concept is to create an installation of five similar yet individually distinct sculptures, each one aligned with its respective housing cluster. The placement of the five sculptures along the road will create a rhythm that will complement the passage along 29th street and will give a sense of continuity to the passer by.
Reflecting on the stories I have heard about the old log transportation method of log riding, my design theme is a tribute to one of North Vancouver's early working traditions.
In portraying the equilibrium of forces between the rider, the log and the water, a very dynamic sculptural structure of lines and forms is created.
Made of the same material and same colour, the narrative sculpture will become a friendly and playful three dimensional ideogram.
Materials: Welded Steel, painted or powder coated.
Size: approx. 3m x 2m x 1m
Diameter of log: approx. 20cm (8")
Diameter of tube (man): approx. 8cm (3")

Narrative of Concept:
Considering the extremely vast area of the site, and in order to link between its components, I decided to create a number of sculptures, each as a unique independent piece, yet all sharing the same theme and similar look. Soon, the park user will discover and recognize each sculpture as a part of a whole installation.
The sculptures are composed of figures and a ball in a sportive motion. The figures represented by organic branch-like structures, relate both to a sport as a human activity, and to the outdoor landscape and greenery.
Taller than people, the figures are integrated with the surrounding thanks to their airy quality. They are friendly, playful and somewhat humorous. They are in the midst of a sportive activity, capturing the spirit of competition and teamwork.
In the visual representation I include one sculpture with three figures and a ball, and three sculptures of two figures and a ball. These can be placed in coordination with the design team, to serve as landmarks in appropriate locations.
For the playground area I have created a sitting place, integrating a sited figure holding a ball, a bench supported by three balls and a few balls scattered around; calm and pleasant environments for parents and toddlers.
